The corrosion resistance of stainless steel components is one of its core advantages, but it is not "stainless". Its corrosion resistance depends on the material composition (especially alloy elements such as chromium, nickel, molybdenum), surface treatment method, and the usage environment. Specific manifestations can be analyzed from the following aspects:

Specific manifestations can be analyzed from the following aspects:
1、 Core principle of corrosion resistance
      The core of stainless steel's corrosion resistance lies in the formation of a passive film on its surface (mainly composed of chromium trioxide Cr ₂ O3):
      When the chromium content in stainless steel is ≥ 10.5%, chromium reacts with oxygen to form a passivation film. This thin film is extremely thin (about a few nanometers), dense, and has strong adhesion, which can isolate the substrate from external corrosive media (such as air, water, acid and alkali) and prevent further oxidation.
      If the passivation film is damaged (such as mechanical scratches, high-temperature oxidation, strong corrosive environment erosion), as long as there is oxygen around, chromium will regenerate the passivation film and "self repair", which is the key mechanism of its corrosion resistance.
2、 Key factors affecting corrosion resistance performance
1. Environmental media
      Dry air: Almost all stainless steels can maintain stability for a long time and are not easy to rust.
      Damp/Saltwater: 304 performs well in humid environments, but long-term exposure to salt water can lead to pitting corrosion; 316 is resistant to seawater and salt spray due to its molybdenum content.
2.Acid alkali environment:
      Weak acidity and alkalinity (such as food grade acetic acid, detergents): 304 is tolerable.
      Strong acidity and alkalinity (such as sulfuric acid, nitric acid, high concentration alkaline solution): Special materials such as 316L and Hastelloy with stronger corrosion resistance should be selected.
2. Surface condition
      Smooth surface (such as mirror polishing): The passivation film is more complete, less prone to accumulating stains and corrosive media, and has better corrosion resistance than rough surfaces.
      Surface damage (such as scratches, welding spatter): may damage the passivation film and form localized corrosion points (which need to be repaired through acid washing and passivation treatment).
3. Temperature
      At room temperature: Stainless steel has stable corrosion resistance.
      High temperature environment (such as>300 ℃): The passivation film is easily damaged, and some alloy elements (such as nickel) may oxidize at high temperatures. High temperature resistant stainless steel (such as 310S) should be selected.
3、 Common corrosion types and prevention measures
      Uniform corrosion: The overall surface slowly oxidizes (such as ferritic stainless steel rusting in humid environments), which can be avoided by selecting high chromium nickel materials.
      Pitting corrosion: If small holes appear locally (such as 304 in contact with saltwater), it is necessary to use 316 or duplex steel containing molybdenum and keep the surface clean.
      Stress corrosion cracking: Cracking occurs under the combined action of stress (such as welding residual stress) and corrosive media, and requires stress relief through heat treatment or the use of stress corrosion resistant duplex steel.
